One Bluebell

A single bluebell was there
On a littered, barren bank
On a run-down housing development
Cheerless, soulless, rank.

I was passing in my car
When sunlight caught the blue
Of the solitary flower
Gamely pushing through.

Now - will it die or will it prosper?
Can it survive and return next year?
Will other flowers join it?
And deliver us yet more cheer.

This nose thumbing effort by nature
tells us fools rushing by
That though the surroundings be daunting
You can stand out if you try.

A Blackwater Evening

An incredible sunset in a flat blue sky
A calm stillness to the sea
The moon making an early showing
And its all there for me.

A day spent sailing with winds just right
Is rounded off with this splendour
Though the summer is ending now
I am ready for what winter will render.

The river seems to grasp the sun
As it sinks blazing in the west
The tide turns slowly and falls away
And each bird seeks out its nest.

Following this glorious display
All the sunlight is not yet shed
The sky above my vantage point
Turns to a bright so bright red.

So shepherds will now rejoice
And banish their fears or sorrow
Like us they know today's been good
- and so too will be tomorrow.

September 2014

Beams

I see bright beams escaping
Reaching for the ground,
Glorious beams of silver which
Escape the black surround.

These storm clouds which assemble
Gathering power in their midst
Can't stop these shafts from trying
To let the calm persist.

There's example here for people
When hope is out of sight
Within your hell and blackness
Seek the beams of light.

I was driving and the sky was lowering at me over the estuary. Quite suddenly the black clouds parted in several places and bright shafts of sunlight burst through and lit up the ground.
