I love the peace of my river
As it flows in and out to the sea
Moving slowly but determined
It soothes the stress from me.

The gulls that cry in the morning
Or the Curlew chortle at night
Seems to calm my inner soul
And makes everything seem right.

So no need for pills or alcohol
Happiness is within easy reach
When the salt waters of my river
Lap softly at the beach.

Spring Cometh

Come with me to another spring
Let's run towards the sun
Push away all thoughts of winter
A new season is begun.

Green fields and singing birds
Are there beyond the town
A peaceful place in which to view
Natures brand new season's gown.

With the coming of this time
Our soul rises with the light
Optimism in our mood begins
And the negatives all take flight.

Look no more behind you
Push down sad thoughts and dread
Come with me towards the spring
And embrace good times ahead

Old Man

What's your story
Old man?
What have you seen
And done?
Put down that watering can
And sit here in the sun.

Tell me of wars
Old man
Times short of work
And food
Did you serve or work the land
Just did the best you could?

And after that
Old man
You say you took
A wife
Had a child but lost her
So ran away from life.

You ran for thirty years
Old man?
And never more saw
Your home?
Do you find this garden
Has cured your need to roam?

Are you happy now
Old man?
Do you hear the
Skylarks song?
Is your soul at peace here
Have your demons gone?

I've heard your story
Old man
So I know what
To do
If life is cruel to me sometime
I'll get a garden too.

Milestones

A birth under bright lights
with unsteady steps to come.
Large new eyes view new sights
while safely held by mum.

A deep breath - and into school
an old hand by the end of the day.
You pay attention or play the fool
make friends and you are on the way.

A first kiss that glows in your soul
with troubled emotions burning.
Lifelong loving is now your goal
and marriage stems the yearning.

Then come child and maybe child
and you find a different sort of love.
The point of being now reconciled
and possibly there is a God above.

Now, your lover and brood have gone,
alone, you brace your mind
to where you were heading all along
and when there, what you will find.

At each step in life we must be willing
to learn what to take, leave, or share.
Probably on balance life's been fulfilling
and the journey worth the fare?

Gentle Man

I know a very gentle man
who lives across a sea
he's getting quite old now
but continues to inspire me.

His life had a very harsh beginning
while still in his native land
when evil despots invaded
and dealt out pain with a mighty hand.

Some years of terror followed
he trod in fearful zones
a strapping lively boy became
a frightened, starving, bag of bones.

He later went to a promised place
with others in similar strife
and put his recovering soul to work
and built a better life.

His ready smile and tolerance
made him many lasting friends
he inspired forgiveness in others
while governments played at amends.

My friend forgives and does not hate,
wishing no man any harm
and always keeps a sleeve rolled down
on blue numbers tattooed on his arm.

Funeral

Do not mourn my passing
For I'm in a better place
My pain is gone, my spirit's free
And the sun is on my face.

Do not cry at my grave site
Only my body is there (or only my ashes are there)
I've taken the path of eternal rest
And my soul can now repair.

Do not weep when thinking of me
I know you were on my side
We must all make this journey
And after all -
I have only died.
