Don’t leave me Grandpa

A very young girl so bereft
now with none of her family left
her world torn up and over turned
with rules of humanity now all spurned.

They came with the new day dawning
the family shelter just a canvas awning
the thugs with guns and machetes then
slashed and shot and shot again.

Unbelievable torture vented first
on women, old folk and then worse
children and babies killed out of hand
their graves just scratched in shallow sand.

Old Grandpa had bid the family flee
surely the thugs would leave him be?
But no they murdered this man too
and what could this young girl do?

Crying and powerless she clearly saw
her gentle Grandpa sink to the floor.
Across the world we heard her plea
please, please Grandpa don't leave me ....

BBC report of December 8th 2021 Massacre of Villagers in Myanmar (formerly Burma) by the State Army.

SO
Yet another killing of innocent folk
no salvation - what a joke!
Mankind hides till the threat has gone
and again impotent Gods look on.

No Escape

Sitting amidst green glory on a hillside quiet alone
on the gentle wind now comes
the chime of a mobile phone.

But for a while I am at peace and God is in his heaven
and from my left comes the drone
of the busy A127.

Around me are just trees and hedges and it's good to be alive
who cares about the incessant hum
of the M25?

I dig deep within me for calm and solace but even as I delve
just over that hedge to my east buzzes
the old A12.

I look up to the blue sky for clarity but then I surely know
there will be a line of planes letting down to
land at Heathrow.

We live on a lovely island and are glad that that is so
but if one needs peace and quiet just where
are we supposed to go?

Gentle Man

I know a very gentle man
who lives across a sea
he's getting quite old now
but continues to inspire me.

His life had a very harsh beginning
while still in his native land
when evil despots invaded
and dealt out pain with a mighty hand.

Some years of terror followed
he trod in fearful zones
a strapping lively boy became
a frightened, starving, bag of bones.

He later went to a promised place
with others in similar strife
and put his recovering soul to work
and built a better life.

His ready smile and tolerance
made him many lasting friends
he inspired forgiveness in others
while governments played at amends.

My friend forgives and does not hate,
wishing no man any harm
and always keeps a sleeve rolled down
on blue numbers tattooed on his arm.

Gone Viral

It's gone for now, the great escape
where time slows and smiles rise,
the boat yard near the water is
distraction for we ageing guys.

But now there is a bug about
which seeks to strike us low,
keep us home watching telly
and there's nowhere else to go.

I will never again take for granted
a gentle wind on a sunny day,
when the tide is slowly rising
and my boat is under weigh.
