Wait and See

I know it's February because the radio told me so
But today the air was clear and the sun was high.
There was no wind to notice nor flecks of rain
and the birds sang loud as they wheeled about in the sky.

It must be global warming messing with the seasons
As spring comes in early and the buds begin to show.
I feel my soul getting easy and I relax
But mindful that even yet there could come snow.

It has happened before and new shoots died
As the cold weather snapped back at we fools
Who had dug out the garden benches and brollies
And had made plans for mowers and tools.

Far better to wait and let more days go by
To see if the moods of the weather gods settle.
Enjoy the changing vista of fields and gardens
From behind window glass waiting for the kettle.

Old Man

What's your story
Old man?
What have you seen
And done?
Put down that watering can
And sit here in the sun.

Tell me of wars
Old man
Times short of work
And food
Did you serve or work the land
Just did the best you could?

And after that
Old man
You say you took
A wife
Had a child but lost her
So ran away from life.

You ran for thirty years
Old man?
And never more saw
Your home?
Do you find this garden
Has cured your need to roam?

Are you happy now
Old man?
Do you hear the
Skylarks song?
Is your soul at peace here
Have your demons gone?

I've heard your story
Old man
So I know what
To do
If life is cruel to me sometime
I'll get a garden too.

Equal Opportunity

Think what you like
Express whatever you feel
A funeral without a God?
Is it not just as real?

Did they live a good life?
Did someone hold them dear?
If they died a nice person
Aren't they entitled to be here?

The flames which consume them
Makes all bodies ash, but
Souls and spirits cannot burn
And can't be bought for cash.

Sing songs if you wish to
Speak verses and some rhyme
Cry and mourn freely
For there is no next time.

We gather for the send off
Of someone we all knew
Sceptics also need nice places
To wish gone friends adieu.

Vibrant colours of stained glass
Old wood beams and seats
Candlelight and fresh flowers
Gives an aura which completes.

Religions have the best sites
With gardens meant to cheer
Solemnity is inbuilt
And we enter without fear.

If this God is any good
He (or she) won't grouse
If some doubters also assemble
Inside his holy house.
