My Prop Has Gone

Quiet and unassuming was he
But with a very high intellect
Computations went on behind the eyes
At a rate you would never suspect.

Partially deaf and short sighted too
Yet he swam in big pools of commerce
He never gave in to self pity but
Accepted that things could be far worse.

He was the man to go to for solace or wisdom
And was game to join with a crazy plan
Even risking his own wealth sometimes
He was the very best kind of man.

So goodbye good friend and wise councillor
I am sorry you had to go
Rest easily knowing you have done well
And were a man I was fortunate to know.

RIP Barry 1933-2022

Gentle Man

I know a very gentle man
who lives across a sea
he's getting quite old now
but continues to inspire me.

His life had a very harsh beginning
while still in his native land
when evil despots invaded
and dealt out pain with a mighty hand.

Some years of terror followed
he trod in fearful zones
a strapping lively boy became
a frightened, starving, bag of bones.

He later went to a promised place
with others in similar strife
and put his recovering soul to work
and built a better life.

His ready smile and tolerance
made him many lasting friends
he inspired forgiveness in others
while governments played at amends.

My friend forgives and does not hate,
wishing no man any harm
and always keeps a sleeve rolled down
on blue numbers tattooed on his arm.

Carol of Hope

It's that time of the year again
When our hearts fill with cheer again.
Across all the lands
Nations could join hands,
Now it's that time of year again.

Just think how good it would be
If the world joined with you and me;
With our differences gone
We could move the world on,
Now it's that time of year again.

You can say that it's only a feast,
And pointless to man or beast;
But this Christmas we might
Put some old evils right,
As it's that time of year again.

Be you Christian, Muslim or Jew,
We share the planet with you,
So let's make amends,
Let us all be friends
Now it's that time of year again.

The Hole

There is a hole in all our lives now
because he went away
he was the sort of friend you treasure
and want forever to stay.

We miss his fulsome greetings
always certain to banish gloom
and the single minded quest for food
brought laughter to any room.

Only with us for a short time
fewer years than what is fair
we still look towards his bed each day
and expect him to be there.

So there's this hole in our lives now
and will be evermore
a very large and definite void
….in the shape of a Labrador.

My Friend the River

On her waters I have cried and feared
But I have also dreamt my dreams
Shared magic moments with good friends
Who applauded my foolish schemes.

On her waves and tides I am clever
I can move mountains or part the sea
I can never express just how much
My estuary means to me.

Muddy, yet green and majestic
this river is my friend and my prop
May it ebb and flow for ever
till the World's End bids it stop.
